The Latest in High Brightness LED Technology and
Green Roofs - The Australian Experience
Where: Gardens At Night, 1316 Malvern Road, Malvern Vic 3144
When: Thursday 15 October 2009 starting at 6:00pm.
Cost: AILDM Members free, Non Members $20
RSVP: 9 October to administrator@aildm.com.au
This is set to be an enjoyable and social evening catching up with your fellow AILDM members.
There are two highly professional speakers -
Blair Thomson of Gardens at Night (a fully qualified (techies) lighting designer) discussing the latest in high brightness LED technology.
John Rayner of Melbourne University discussing roof gardens, green roofs and green walls.
Roof gardens, green roofs and green walls are rightly becoming popular in Australia however a major barrier to their uptake and success is the lack of systems, materials and performance data under local conditions. Relying on European and North American experiences is problematic due to significant differences in climate (particularly rainfall and temperature), available green roof substrates and plants.
This presentation will introduce different types of greening for roofs and walls, describe the available systems, discuss construction and design considerations, with a focus on plants and planting design options, and conclude with an overview of the research being undertaken at the University of Melbourne, Burnley Campus. These research efforts include substrate analysis and development, evaluation of plant performance, with a focus on Australian plants, and assessing the energy benefits of green roofs. It is hoped that the research program at Burnley will be used to objectively provide information to architects, developers, landscape designers and public policy makers and help to guide the development of a green roof industry in Australia
Biography
John Rayner is a Lecturer in Urban Horticulture at the University of Melbourne. Based at the Burnley Campus for almost 20 years, John’s main teaching and research interests are in the selection, design and management of landscape plants, including green roofs, façade greening, ground covers, children’s and therapeutic landscapes. He regularly acts as a horticultural consultant for state and local government authorities in these areas. John’s interests in plants are extensive and he gains great joy in torturing and nurturing them in his 1 ha garden in the Dandenongs.
