Past AILDM Seminars
Saturday, 19 June 2010 - MelbourneTopic: Using Australian native grasses in landscaping - Why? How? What can go wrong?
Australian native grasses are very popular for use in landscaping owing to several factors. Firstly, they can look spectacular, secondly, they are well adapted to local conditions and if used in the correct locations will persist and perform for many years, and thirdly, they require little maintenance once established.
This seminar presentation looks at a selection of Australian native grasses that suit landscapes in southern Australia, it presents information on how they grow, when they grow, how large they become and where they are best used. The presentation will go well beyond the use of the most common types of grasses - Tussock grass (Poa labillardieri) and Fountain grass (Pennisetum alopecuroides) to show off some of the other grasses that are useful in urban and urban-fringe landscaping including native lawns.
A number of common errors made in job specifications will be shown and suggestions made as to how these can be avoided and client satisfaction increased. Issues such as appropriate seed mixtures, planting rates, species lists, sowing methods and maintenance periods will be discussed.
Ian Chivers
Ian has been involved with native grass seeds for in excess of 25 years. In that time he has bred grasses, researched into them, sown, managed and harvested crops and established Native Seeds P/L the largest seller of Australian native grasses. He continues to undertake research, often through projects developed in conjunction with Australian Universities, and leads the technical development of the native grass seed industry in Australia.
He manages his own seed production enterprise based in South Gippsland, Victoria where he is converting a dairy farm into a seed production operation. In doing so he has to apply all the skills learnt over the past decades.
Topic: Department of Primary Industries Weed Spotter session
Look, see and feel Victoria's State prohibited weeds and learn what to do if you see these high risk invasive plants. AILDM members have the opportunity to reduce the threat of new high risk invasive plants becoming naturalised and impacting on Victoria's environment, economy and social values. This is a follow up from last years AILDM weedspotter training and represents a good opportunity to see these plants close up and in real life and is the best way to refresh your memory.

Concrete Pool Design and Natural Pool Filtration Systems
Rob Meloury has extensive experience in pool design and will be presenting an introduction to concrete pool design. He will outline the structural and aesthetic design considerations such as paving modules, interior finishes, material recommendations, pool equipment advances and requirements, siting a pool in the landscape, fencing regulations, engineering principles, budgetary considerations, recommendations on pool builders and trades to undertake pool construction and associated works.
Ian Boulter from Aquaviva will discuss the use of natural pool filtration systems. Traditional pools use chemicals to keep the water free from algae and other impurities. Chlorine is used in most pools (also in salt chlorinated pools) and more and more people, especially children, have developed allergies and eye irritation from some of these chemicals. Imagine swimming in a pool with the water quality of a mountain stream: no chemical additives just the simple elegance of pure water and fun.

Establishment and Selection of Trees
Choosing high quality planting material that has been professionally nurtured into advanced sizes will greatly improve planting success, reducing ongoing maintenance and landscape management costs in the longer term. During this seminar a general discussion will be presented which outlines the importance of matching site conditions with plant selection (physical soil properties, soil chemistry issues etc), identifying the characteristics of good planting stock (shoot:root ratio, formative pruning, calliper width in relation to height etc) and the importance of good establishment techniques (soil additives, growth enhancers, irrigation schedule etc). This will be followed by a tour of the Nursery and an introduction to some of the select varieties of trees grown by the team at Speciality Trees.
Hamish Mitchell - With a passion for trees in urban environments and a career that spans 25 years in amenity horticulture, plant management and development, production and plant marketing.
Ben Scoble - As Sales Manager at Speciality Trees, his straight-forward hands-on approach, passion for all things green, natural talent for sales and leadership ability has been fundamental in achieving significant business milestones in a relatively short period of time.

The Good, The Bad and the AILDM Gurus (27 November 2007 - Sydney)
We all started out in the landscaping business with a dream of where we were going. But did you get there?
Our three speakers have all gone in directions they may not have imagined when they began. They will describe how they started out in garden design and discuss the successes and perhaps some of the failures in their careers. Plus they'll discuss how they found their new direction and how, no matter what you do in the gardening world, your skills as a designer or garden manager are always relevant and worthwhile.
Dean Boone - Dean is not just a TV guru.
Andrew Davies - Andrew is an extremely creative and passionate designer.
Debbie McDonald - From gardener to garden designer to assistant Editor of the ABC's Gardening Australia magazine.
All three have worked hard to achieve their success and all three have so much knowledge to impart..... our own AILDM gurus.

FIRST Seminar held in Melbourne (12 May 2007 - Melbourne)
Thank you very much to those who were able to make it to the FIRST AILDM Seminar in Melbourne. The event ran very well, the turnout was excellent and I hope everyone enjoyed the speaker Steve Watt from Metro Trees.
Over 80% of Victorian members indicated interest in out first seminar and nearly all of those were able to get there on the day. We had some guests and Chris Miller the President down from Sydney so we had 21 in total. The feedback and enthusiasm was very positive and we hope to build on this event. This has been an excellent start. The common call from all members has been that "nothing every happens in Victoria". Well something is happening now so please make every effort to come along if you can. For the members from out of Melbourne - extra thanks for the effort.
