National Student Design Competition

AILDM National Student Design Competition 2010

The Australian Institute of Landscape Designers and Managers (AILDM) announces the 2010 National Student Design Competition for students enrolled in a landscape design course in Australia which leads to an award of Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Design Certificate IV or Degree. Students studying for other awards may apply for special permission to enter with the support of their design teacher.

Prizes

1st     $1000
2nd    $500
3rd     $300

In addition to our usual magnificent prizes there will be an additional award attached to this competition. This award will be named the Allan Correy Student Design Award and commemorates the enormous contribution made to our profession by AILDM’s patron, Allan Correy.

The prize will be a trophy in the same form as the annual AILDM Design Award trophies as well as a bound copy of a thesis on Allan’s career by UNSW graduate Terry Boyle. This prize will go to the entry that best represents the spirit of landscape design and may be awarded to any entry - it does not necessarily have to be a place-getter in the Student Design Competition.

The Competition

The philosophy of this competition is to encourage students to design imaginatively and creatively while being mindful of the practical considerations of site constraints and opportunities, client’s needs, local government rules and environmental issues. While students are not restricted by a design and construction budget, they must be able to specify and source from where the materials for the garden would be obtained including all hard & soft landscaping elements.

The design is for a residential garden for a young family. The garden can be located in any urban location in Australia (state the location of the garden in the design philosophy).

Brief

NOTE: Teachers may make minor variations to the brief to fit in with their courses or projects

Design a garden for the rear of a two-storey attached house in an inner city suburb. The occupants are a couple with two young children.

The rear of the house backs on to a lane but car access is not needed. Some soft surface is required and the family wants a vegetable garden and a couple of small fruit trees. They need a clothes line and entertaining space, as well as storage for bikes and a few garden tools.

Garbage and recycling bins are collected from the lane. There are two small rainwater tanks located on the side of the house and they will be used for watering the garden.

There is considerable overlooking from the neighbouring row of houses, especially from the north.

The existing fences are 1800mm high timber paling; they may be replaced with any material.

The sliding doors may open in either direction (indicate which direction you choose).
